The facility is large enough to actually contribute to the export of Costa Rica . This closure may be linked to sluggish demand in the PC industry as the popularity of smartphones and tablet PCs .
"The facility was closed and consolidated with our other operations around the world , " said Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy is quoted by Reuters on Wednesday ( 04/09/2014 ) . Intel does have similar facilities in China , Malaysia and Vietnam .
Despite layoffs in large enough quantities , Intel will still employ about 1000 workers of technical , financial and human resources in Costa Rica . And they are still going to open at least 200 more jobs this year .

In January, Intel is planning to decrease the number of employees by 5 % in stages . Today, Intel employs a total of about 107 thousand employees worldwide .
Intel closed the assembly facility and test products located in Costa Rica . A total of 1,500 Intel employees in the country certainly been laid off .
